Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Wiki Guide

Coming from a portal from the Witcher universe straight into the lands of the fifth fleet, the Leshen is a terrifying foe, and you'll need the help of a famous Witcher to take it down. Leshens use their magic to control flora and fauna within their territory, turning the world of Monster Hunter against you.

How to Start The Witcher 3 Collaboration Quest

To fight Leshen, you'll have to take part in the Witcher 3 Collaboration Quest. Here's how to do so:

  • Hunter Rank 16 is required to start this quest.
  • First, make sure Monster Hunter World has updated to Version 6.0.
  • Talk to the felyne in blue armor right in front of the Provisions Stockpile
  • Agree to travel to the Research Base
  • Talk to the Lynian Expert (Tailraider Safari lady) downstairs.
  • Agree to Play as Geralt, The Witcher
  • If you fail, speak to The Witcher at the Research Base
  • Once you beat it once, it will be available from the Quest Board beneath Special Assignments

Witcher Walkthrough: How to Defeat the Leshen With Geralt

Most of this mission is straight forward. Keep an eye on your map for icons of where to go, and pay attention to the prompts, and you should be fine.

The Leshen, on the other hand, is quite challenging. We had success fighting it with the given Sword and Shield. Here are some tips.

  • Using Igni with the Sword and Shield equipped is easy. Block with R2 and press Square/X to use Igni without having to sheathe your weapon.
  • Use Igni at will as often as possible - just make sure you time it right so it doesn't miss! Watch for the Leshen's teleportation tell.
  • However, once you reach the third area of the fight, hang on to Igni. The Leshen will start summoning Jagras - which Igni can kill in one hit.
  • Ideally, Wait for the Jagras to crowd around the Leshen, and hit them all with Igni in one shot.
  • If Igni isn't up, keep the Jagras at bay for a time with a Flash Pod.
  • Focus on breaking the Leshen's horse to reduce how often it calls for back up.
  • Keep Slinger Ammo on-hand at all times. Use it to stun the Leshen right before it disappears into the shadows. It will appear black, but the figure will still be there.
  • When the Leshen thrusts its roots into the ground, put up your shield to block the incoming blow. When you're far away, you can see the roots as glowing trails on the ground, but when you're close, it will most likely be a large AOE.
  • The Leshen is susceptible to poison. Take advantage of the Poison Daggers (and other supplies) in any blue Supply Box at any camp.
  • For additional help against the Leshen, you can save a Pukei Pukei from the vines, behind the first one you find. It will appear in the final phase of the fight, and can be healed with Life Powders.

Leshen Strategy

With a new update to the game, you can fight Leshen and Ancient Leshen with your main character using any weapon in the game. Your strategy shouldn't change much from your previous encounter. So please refer to the guide above for strategy with the beast.

Monster Hunter: World Ancient Leshen - how to fight it, what is its weakness

Monster Hunter: World has a couple of crossover events, but the most ambitious puts us in the shoes of Geralt of Rivia as he hunts down the monster that transported him and a Nekker to the forest. This turns out to be the Leshen who has taken up residence in the Ancient Forest and disturbed the natural order. You'll therefore need to put it down.

Those new to hunting monsters, or if you just need to find a particular monster guide to get up to Hunter Rank 16 - needed to start this quest - should head over to our Monster Hunter World guide hub for a plethora of guides.

Monster Hunter: World Ancient Leshen guide

This guide will go over While technically a new class of monster known as a "Relict", they're normally found in the Ancient Forests of Velen and are slow-moving magic users that can turn into crows. They're based on the Slavic mythological deity of the forests, known as the Leshy, and are found only in woodland areas in order to be close to the animals.

If you are looking for specifically Monster Hunter World Iceborne guides, then we have created a separate guide hub for just expansion stuff. Head over to our Monster Hunter World Iceborne guide to make your start.

The differences in the Ancient Leshen's stats in the Monster Field guide.

Ancient Leshen weaknesses and resistances

This section is for those who have already completed the quest below that leads to the Leshen. From 17th May 2019 until 30th May 2019, Hunters of Rank 50 will be able to fight a stronger version of the Leshen. This one is pretty much the same as the normal version, in that fire is the way to go and it has the same breakable parts.

The only real differences is that the Ancient Leshen has a few more resistances to ailments. Poison isn't as viable, while Paralysis and Blast are about as useful as Stun is to the regular version. So really if you want to deal the most damage you can to it, just stick to waving a stick of fire in its face.

The Ancient Leshen

How to kill the Ancient Leshen

Comparatively speaking, the fight between the two is remarkably similar to the regular Leshen, but there are several things to consider when fighting the Ancient Leshen:

Firstly, make sure you bring health regenerative augments for your gear. You'll badly need it because of the fact that both the Revoltures and the Jagras that will arrive in the fight can chip away at your health. Since this is a fight of endurance more than anything else, you'll want to ensure you're only using health potions when you need them, rather than popping potions because some pests pecked away at you.

The other thing to definitely bring with you is Flash Pods. These can be used to interrupt some of its more devastating attacks, such as the grab or crow explosion for example. Teammates should also have an array of buffing items, like the Mega Demondrug, Mega Armorskin, Demon Powder, Hardshell Powder, and either of the two seeds.

It begins the level in area 12, so fly towards the camp in area 11 to cover a large distance. Make sure you have one of the team shoot down the boulder on top of the Ancient Leshen and its Jagras cronies. When you're fighting it, it does have largely the same moves, but it now can grab and imprison players with its roots - which can be burnt away or interrupted with the Flash Pods. The other new attack is a huge AOE attack that is akin to Teostra's explosion. Don't try to tank this, but instead either use a flash pod to interrupt it or dive to the ground as it detonates.

Ancient Leshen materials

When you've beaten the Ancient Leshen, you'll be able to get a ton of different materials. Here are all of the items you can get in order to create some specialised Witcher 3 items for your hunter, including a Ciri costume and some new weapons.

The Leshen's entry in the Monster Field Guide

Leshen's weaknesses and resistances

As any Witcher knows, fire is by far the best thing to use against the Leshen. It not only deals a lot of damage, but if you use the Igni magic against it, it will stagger it for a short time, dispersing some of the Revoltures around it or burn away any of the roots it has set up to defend itself against you. Water and Ice are the worst elements to try and use against it, while thunder and dragon deal decent damage, but realistically you should by now have a fire weapon to reliably hit it with.

As for the ailments, it's much the same breakdown, only poison is the optimal element of choice. It's susceptible to paralysis, though I never quite got blast to work against it. The ones to avoid entirely are sleep, which will do nothing, and stun, which is just not worth it when paralysis works a little better.

Luckily, its head is the weak point for all weapons and it can be broken twice for different rewards. Body and leg shots will eventually break them, but realistically you'll want to go for the head as much as possible.

Some Palicos worried about what they saw in the forest.

How to find the Leshen quest in Monster Hunter: World

First of all, you need to be of Hunter Rank 16 or above to complete the quest. This means you have at the very least completed the main story by defeating Xeno'jiiva and saving the new world. If you're struggling with this baby Elder Dragon, head to our Monster Hunter: World Xeno'jiiva guide to learn more about how to defeat it. Once done, talk to the cats standing nearby at Astera, or just go straight to the Research Base to talk to the person at with the exclamation point. This will eventually lead to Geralt of Rivia being summoned. Agree to begin the mission "Contract: Trouble in the Ancient Forest".

Geralt is standing over a dead Aptonoth with the researcher, examining the corpse.

Contract: Trouble in the Ancient Forest

You need to complete a couple of in-mission quests before you can find the Leshen. The first mission will be to talk to a nearby researcher. After exhausting the dialogue options, head forward until you find some feathers. Follow the trail and you'll find another dead Aptonoth surrounded by Revoltures. Quickly run in and use Igni to disperse them without a fight. This will complete the first part of the contract.

The second can be found if you head towards the north-east of the map. Examine the book highlighted and follow the trail, up to a second book, then to examine some roots, before finally arriving at the researcher. After talking to him, use Igni to free him from his bonds. Talk to him some more to get more information to complete the quest. If you've completed both quests, head to the new red way point on the map in area 12 to be ambushed by Jagras. They're a little stronger than usual, but shouldn't be a problem. Once beaten, interact with the totem to burn it down and begin the hunt for real.

Geralt encounters some Gajalaka gathered by the Rathalos nest.

Side quests

This event also has some side quests to complete before you finish the hunt. You'll need to finish all of them to get the true ending for this particular quest.

  • Rescue the Pukei-Pukei - Look for the one Pukei-Pukei left alive in the roots. This is in the same area the researcher who is trapped in the vines is in, so use Igni to free it. Use the Lifepowder when it appears during the Leshen fight.
  • Strange Markings from Gajalaka - Find any of the markings in caves. Talk to the researcher in Area 12, then go up the tree to near the camp at 17. This is where Rathalos's nest is. Defeat the Gajalaka, then agree to be their chief. Head straight to Area 13 (or Area 1 if you want to talk to the handler first) in order to find the former chief next to a giant vigorwasp. Defeat him to complete the side quest.

Geralt has just used Igni to stun and burn the Leshen.

How do I kill the Leshen?

Want some advice Hunter? Geralt of Rivia's sword is no match for some of the gear that you've been building up and chances are that you're probably using a weapon set that isn't just a straight up sword and shield. Therefore it's recommended that you swap out Geralt's gear one of the weapon sets via the people near the camps. Leshen is surprisingly susceptible to the Dual Blades being used straight after the whole Igni fire attack, but it's also very vulnerable to any attacks that take a long time to charge up in that state.

Leshen has a number of attacks it can yield. It can summon Revoltures to surround it, meaning getting in close to dish out damage could be a slightly painful experience. Use Igni to burn them away when possible. The Revoltures can be send outwards in a wave for moderate damage, so look for when its arm is outstretched.

Not content with just being able to summon Revoltures, it can also make the forest itself attack you, or defend against your assault. It'll telegraph this by plunging its claw into the ground, so just keep an eye on the ground for ripples. If the ripples come towards you, dive to the side to avoid the ripple, or forward to dodge the branches springing outwards to attack. If the roots encircle it, try to make your way around it, or use Igni to burn away any bothersome roots.

Another annoying thing about the Leshen is that the claws have a serrated edge to them. It can therefore inflict the Bleed status ailment. To heal this, make sure you are not locking onto the target before you press the dodge button and nothing else. This will make you crouch, which gives you a few seconds to heal Bleed and initiate some latent healing if you've not recovered fully.

The thing that will probably throw you for a loop is the Jagras it summons. Yes, these minnows are even more of a nuisance than they were when you've been fighting the Great Jagras, thanks in no small part to the fact that around three to four of them can appear at once, interrupting you whenever you try to heal. Whenever they spawn, telegraphed by the Leshen emitting a loud howl, try to ignore the Leshen unless you have Igni on hand to burn the Leshen and any nearby enemies.

Once you defeat the Leshen, you'll get the Hunter Runestone rune for your troubles and can use the Igni ability by either using the stone or the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt emote.

Geralt is fleeing from some Jagras to try and drink a healing potion. The Leshen is briefly stunned.

What materials can I get from Leshen?

The Leshen can't be captured, similar to an Elder Dragon. Though the standard version is only available single player, there is a nastier Ancient Leshen that will appear later on that you must connect with a few other players to survive. You can check out our Monster Hunter: World PC multiplayer guide for more information. Leshen's materials are essential for crafting any of the Witcher gear that this update brings, so you can either check out our Monster Hunter: World combat guide or our Monster Hunter: World armour guide. In the list below, the stars indicate the frequency in which the item in question will drop, as well as details on whether some items are obtained by breaking a specific part of the monster.

When you've finally taken down the Leshen, there will be an Ancient variant coming soon, but other than that there's only the previously available monsters to slay. So repeatedly hunt monsters to get decent equipment to prepare yourself for the new island. You can learn more about the previous bosses introduced in the free updates from our Monster Hunter: World Behemoth, Monster Hunter: World Deviljho, or our Monster Hunter: World Lunastra guides. There is also another elusive Elder Dragon that only appears once in a blue moon, so prepare in advance by looking at our our Monster Hunter: World Kirin guide.

MHW - Ancient Leshen (4 Aerial Great Sword) 02'30\

Ancient Leshen is an Large Monster in Monster Hunter World (MHW). エンシェント・レーシェン (Enshento Rēshen) in Japanese.

An old leshen that arrived through a portal to assume control of the Ancient Forest. Sometimes revered as an indigenous deity. Ancient Leshens use their wisdom and tactical knowledge to curse hunters and send packs of wild Jagras after them.

Ancient Leshen Details & Locations

Ancient Leshen Combat Info

Ancient Leshen Guide

This quest’s difficulty will be on par with Extreme Behemoth. While it is possible to solo, Ancient Leshen’s large health pool and summoning mechanics will make it extremely difficult. Gather some friends or find a lobby that is hosting this quest to easily find other players as SOS were little to none during the time tested.

Upon arrival quickly open your map and fly to Camp 11 in the Northeast as the Ancient Leshen starts in Quadrant 12. Pick up the Redpit slinger thats on the slope near camp. Jump across the gap, swing from the vine, and head down the root to be outside of the Leshen’s first area. Hopefully, one member of the team have wide range to share their buffs with the whole team. These buffs include:

  • Mega Demondrug
  • Mega Armorskin
  • Demon Powder
  • Hardshell Powder
  • Attack Seeds
  • Defense Seeds

Enter Quadrant 12 by crawling under the tree vine and have 1 member turn left, look up and shoot down the boulder onto the Leshen. Doing this deals 3375 damage to the Leshen and 480 to the surrounding Jagras. Another member should run up to the Leshen and drop their Health Booster. Other team members should dawn their Temporal Mantle and go to town. Temporal Mantle will negate heavy damage but the chip damage taken from the Leshen’s crow aura will bypass it thus needing the Health Booster on the ground to counter it. I usually refrain from popping my Temporal until a minute goes by so not all Temporal Mantles will be on cool down at the same time.

The Leshen fights similarly as the one everyone had to fight in Contract: Trouble in the Ancient Forest. His primary attacking are summoning roots to attack the player. The offensive version will travel in a linear V-shaped path while the defensive version will summon a wall of roots around the Leshen which will spread outward 3 times. If players get too close he will swing his arms punching the player away. He also have a root attack that will come up from the ground at the feet of a random player. This attack has a long range on where it can spawn and it has a moderate range from which it extends to. He can send out his murder of crows to attack the player in succession.

The deadly attack to watch out for is a CC type move from the Leshen which he will imprison a player with roots. The crows will deal damage over time as well as the Leshen may attack the player or summon his pack of Jagras until the Leshen will shoot a bursting root at the player. This attack is lethal as a 200 HP character with good defense will barely survive it let alone if they were already weak or was attack by other beings once caught. Luckily your teammates can save you if you are caught. Use the Hunter Runestone or Igni to set the roots aflame. Alternatively, players may also flash the Leshen which will break the hold.

The Leshen likes to teleport around the area, so using the slinger and shooting him will stagger him at times allowing your teammates to continue their onslaught. There are scatternuts, redpits, puddle pods, and the Leshen will drop dragon and piercing pods that all can be used.

When the Ancient Leshen summons his Jagras pack make sure to eliminate them as quick as possible. These Jagras are tanky and are highly annoying due to the vast number of them while the Leshen will enclose players in a root prison while distracted. Players that have long weapons like a longsword should focus them down to allow the other teammates to focus on the Ancient Leshen. If overrun use flash pods to temporarily stun the Leshen and all the Jagras.

At times the Ancient Leshen will cause a large rumble and explode scattering tons of crows throughout the map. This attack hits very hard so it’s not wise to try to tank it. This attack is similar to Teostra’s fire AOE which they charge up then explodes. A flash pod will be able to counter this attack or simply use your superman dive to safely avoid it. This attack may occur up to 4 times during this quest.

The Leshen has 2 different paths he may take during this quest.

  • Path 1 is Quadrant 12, 8, 7, finally 6.
  • Path 2 is Quadrant 12, 5, 4, finally 2.

Final Tips

  • Hitting the Leshen with the boulder in Quadrant 12 is a must!
  • Bring Temporal Mantles and Health Boosters
  • Health Augment on your weapon can counter the chip damage from the Leshen’s crow aura.
  • Having 1 player healing the team will improve success rate.
  • If players have weapons that helps them mount, take advantage of it.
  • Ancient Leshen is 3 star weak to fire, 2 star weak to dragon and thunder
  • Poison is the ailment he is weakest to.
  • Paralyze can allow players extra time to attack.
  •  Bring Flash Pods
  • Bring your igni! (quest reward from witcher version) Its a great way to give you an opening and help care for the bats!
