The Salami Lid, also known as Duhsalamilihd, is a video remix series based on a June 2020 TikTok video of a person attempting to put a plastic lid over a steel container filled with the cured meat salami. The narration, which may be generated by a voice modulator, also features a distinct echo effect, which many have incorporated into memes based on the video.
On June 27th, 2020, TikToker @george.yn published the video. Within two months, the video received more than 1.3 million views, 293,000 reactions and 3,300 comments (shown below).
As the person in the video attempts to cover the salami, they say in a deep voice:
The salami lid ain gonna fit. So the salami lid won’t fit da salami lid. The salami ain't gonna fit like that. So the salami lid is uh salami lid
Shortly after the video published, people began using the video as a sound on TikTok, producing their own videos that use @george.yn's narration. For example, TikToker @krystmang used the sound to narrate an attempt to close an ice chest. The post received more than 95,000 reactions in one week (shown below, left). TikToker @smoochyboots shared a variation that used the narration to provide the soundtrack for a video of a cat getting stuck in a gate (shown below, right).
On June 30th, Twitter user @beegkee shared the video with the caption, "thank u hana for sharing this gem with me at 4:30am this is how my brain feels rn." The tweet received more than 355,000 views, 9,000 likes and 2,300 retweets (shown below).
The video also grew in usage on YouTube. On July 3rd, YouTuber salami lid posted the video, receiving more than 561,000 views (shown below, left). About two weeks later, YouTuber Yogurt Cap posted a variation entitled "POV: You are a Salami Lid" in which two animated characters speak the narration. The post received more than 65,000 views in less than one month (shown below, right).
