Infuse app better than Plex on Apple TV 4K?

Yes for the AppleTV 4K. See Tech Specs. No for the HD and earlier models.

There is a caveat for Dolby Vision (DV).

Downloading a DV demo file from Sony, LG, etc is easy (ex: Getting a DV version of Guardians of the Galaxy, not so much.

Ripping a Blu-ray with Dolby Vision to play in Plex is not straightforward. It has to do with the version of Dolby Vision on the disc vs what is supported by the AppleTV, Nvidia Shield, etc. A compounding factor is that the MKV container does not yet formally support Dolby Vision. The MP4 container does, but does not support lossless audio such as TrueHD & dts-HD MA.

There is a long, detailed thread in the Nvidia Shield / Android TV section covering this. I’ll add the link if I can find it.

The short answer is that it isn’t quite there yet. The good news is that people are working on it, including some from Plex.

I’m going to stop, because that’s pretty much the extent of my knowledge on the subject, and I’ve probably mis-stated a couple of things.

I’ll let others fill in the details and point out anything I got wrong.

From hero to zero

This used to be an absolute fav but am now looking for an alternative. Every update causes problems server setting become unavailable can not connect and end up spending more time fixing probs than being entertained. Guys stop adding new features and sort out a stable platform cos when it works it rocks

Getting harder and harder to use

Plex used to be easy to use. To sync files and Unsync them to my devices. Now it’s impossible to find how to unsync anything. And trying to find my way through all the extra things it tries to force on us is incredibly annoying. All I want to do is play my files that I have. I don’t want paid content. I don’t want the free content. Just my stuff. Getting to my content has gotten harder and harder. It insists on showing “recommended” content all the time. I know what I want to see and it’s not recommendations. Just stop it.

Notice that the reviews giving high stars are from at least two years ago. Take note...

Amazing media handling

I use it for tv and movie management and it’s sublime. So easy to playback from numerous locations and devices. You can stop playback on one and resume it on another. The server side requires a bit of tech knowledge to setup but it’s not actually difficult if you know about folder structures then you know enough.

How to Get Plex on Your Apple TV

Plex is a program that runs on many devices and operating systems that allows for video sharing. The application streams video content across multiple devices.

After you set up Plex on your computer and attach it to your media library, you can access your videos, music, and photos from anywhere. Plex plays content on local network devices, including smart TV boxes like the Apple TV.

Plex works best on the fourth generation of Apple TV. Still, with a bit of effort, you can get Plex working on a third-generation Apple TV.

Identify Your Apple TV Model

Third-generation Apple TVs and earlier do not ship with the Plex app, and you cannot install additional apps on the device. However, if you're willing to do a little software hacking, you should be able to get Plex to run on an older Apple TV. Use the PlexConnect workaround to run Plex on a third-generation Apple TV, but it is challenging to get it running.

If you have a fourth-generation or newer Apple TV, use the tvOS App Store to download the Plex app for Apple TV.

It's not easy to tell the difference between the two Apple TVs at a glance. Both are small black boxes with rounded edges. The fourth-generation Apple TV (2015) came with the black touch-sensitive Siri remote, and the third-generation Apple TV came with a silver remote with a control wheel.

If you can't determine which is which, use Apple's guide to identifying your Apple TV.

Install Plex on a Fourth-Generation Apple TV or Later

Compared with the procedure for installing Plex on a third-generation Apple TV, the process for a fourth-generation and later Apple TV is simple.

  1. Open the App Store app on your Apple TV. Search for the Plex app and download it to your Apple TV.

  2. Open the Plex app. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to your Plex account using the provided link and four-digit code.

  3. Select your Plex server from the list and start streaming content.

Install Plex on a Third-Generation Apple TV

The installation procedure for the third-generation Apple TV is more complicated. Before starting, read the installation process from start to finish to gauge your comfort level.

It requires configuring your host device (PC or Mac), your network, and your Apple TV. We'll use Python scripts to duplicate an existing Apple TV application then trick it into playing Plex's content. It's a clever workaround, but it's not plug-and-play.

Install Plex Connect on Your Server

Before you get started, you'll need to set up a couple of things correctly:

  • Ensure your Apple TV has supported firmware (versions 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 6.x, and 7.x are supported).
  • Install Python 2.7.x on the machine that runs your Plex server. Python 3 will not work. Python 2.7 is installed on Mac computers. On Windows, download and install Python 2.7.15 or later.
  • Set a static IP address for your Plex Media Server device and your Apple TV. The easiest way to do this is through DCHP reservations on your router.

Also, install the latest version of Plex Media Server on your server device. You can update Plex Media Server through the update page on your Plex server.

When everything is ready, install the PlexConnect client on your server machine. Broadly, you'll need to download PlexConnect, get a security certificate for it, and launch the daemon.

Install PlexConnect on Mac

Here's how to install it on a Mac.

  1. Download and unzip the PlexConnect archive from GitHub.

  2. Move the PlexConnect folder to /Applications/ on your Mac.

  3. Create and install an SSL certificate for your Apple TV. It's a multi-step process, so follow this guide on creating SSL certificates for the Apple TV to set it up.

  4. Run the following command in Terminal to start the PlexConnect daemon:

    sudo "/Applications/PlexConnect/"

    Plex will now run.

Install PlexConnect on Windows

Here's how to install it on a Windows PC.

  1. Download and unzip the PlexConnect files.

  2. Move the PlexConnect folder to the Program Files folder. Use C:\Program Files (x86) if exists or C:\Program Files otherwise.

  3. Generate the SSL certificate by following this guide to creating Windows SSL certificates.

  4. Open the PlexConnect folder in Explorer and double-click the file to launch it. When asked to approve the application by UAC, click Allow Access.

Set Apple TV DNS Settings

Now that PlexConnect runs on your server, configure the Apple TV. The DNS settings need to be changed to point at your PlexConnect machine.

  1. If your Apple TV is connected over Wi-Fi, go to Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi. Select your Wi-Fi network's name from the menu.

If your Apple TV is connected over Ethernet, navigate to Settings > General > Network > Ethernet.

  2. Change the DNS settings from Automatic to Manual.

  3. Enter your Plex server's IP address, which you set up earlier using DHCP reservations. If you don't recall the IP address, you can find it in your router configuration.

Install the SSL Certificate on Your Apple TV

The SSL certificate allows your Plex server and your Apple TV to communicate over HTTPS. While HTTPS is a more secure protocol than HTTP, that's not the primary concern. Apple TVs no longer communicate over unencrypted HTTP connections, so an SSL certificate is required.

  1. Navigate to the Apple TV's Settings menu.

  2. Select General > Send Data to Apple and choose No.

  3. With Send Data To Apple still selected, press the Play button (not the normal Select button) on the remote. It starts the process of adding a profile to your Apple TV.

  4. In the dialog box, enter exactly.

Stream With PlexConnect

With Plex Connect running on your server, you can now access Plex on your Apple TV. Open the Trailers app on your Apple TV, and you'll connect to the Plex application.

Automatically Run PlexConnect at Startup

By default, you'll need to launch every time your server restarts manually. If you want to make it run at startup either as a daemon on macOS or a Windows service, that's possible. Follow the instructions below.

To run as a service on startup, install PyWin32. This extension of the Windows operating system allows Python scripts to be called without user input, among other things.

You can install PyWin32 by either downloading it from Github and building from source or through pip. If you have Python 2.7.9 or later, pip is automatically installed. To install PyWin32 with pip, run the following command in a CMD window:

pip install pywin32

If pip isn't installed, update your version of Python to a more modern version. If you cannot update your version of Python, build the utility from the source following the instructions on PyWin32's Github page. You can also install pip separately.

With PyWin32 up and running, it's time to configure as a service. First, make sure PlexConnect is not currently running. If there is a CMD window running PlexConnect, use the Ctrl+C keyboard shortcut to shut it down.

Open the PlexConnect directory in your Program Files folder and navigate to the Support\Win folder. There you will find four bat files that you can use to install and uninstall PlexConnect as a service and start and stop the service once it is installed. Run the install.bat file to install as a service.

If PlexConnect is running, quit it by selecting its Terminal window and pressing the Ctrl+C keyboard shortcut.

Once PlexConnect is no longer running, open a new Terminal window and execute the following command:

cd "/Applications/PlexConnect/support/OSX"

sudo ./install.bash

These commands load as a launch daemon, which starts each time your Mac boots up.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you run into trouble while installing Plex on your third-generation Apple TV, check out the PlexConnect documentation on Github. You can also try the Plex forums for problems not covered by the install documentation.

Plex Media Streaming App for 4th Gen Apple TV - [Review]

As a Resource Person, share with your network

What is the upgrade in Apple TV 4K (2021 Plex)? Plex is a free TV streaming service that offers live TV, on-demand movies and shows, and a library of your own media content. Plex takes videos stored in a remote location and streams them to a receiver, usually attached to a television. Plex is a media server. This means that you’ll provide your own content instead of relying on a big company’s library, which usually changes from month to month. Does Apple TV 4K 2021 support Plex?

Pros & Cons – Apple TV 4K (2021 Plex)

  • Capable free version
  • Intuitive apps on many platforms
  • Easy setup
  • Growing library of on-demand and preprogrammed video streaming content

  • No HTPC support
  • Lacks official interface themes

What is the upgrade – Apple TV 4K )2021 Plex?

In the Plex Apple TV and Roku app, you can now head to Settings > Experience to customize the UI. Here are the new options:

  • App/Home Background:
This setting allows the user to select the base background of the app (i.e.: the background used for the home screen, settings, etc…).
    • Artwork Colors (the default): Applies colors from the current title’s artwork to the background and gracefully (we hope!) transitions the colorfield as the title selection changes.
    • None: Displays the default background for the application (dark gradient).
  • Content Layout:
This setting controls the layout used to display your content. Okay, so before you say “No, duh!”, this setting also controls whether “inline metadata” is displayed on the homescreen and the poster is displayed on detail pages.
    • Classic: No “inline” metadata is shown, displays title and additional information below posters, and prefers posters to artwork on detail pages.
    • Modern (the default): Displays artwork and “inline” details about the title on some screens when focused on a poster. This layout also prefers background artwork over posters on title detail pages.
  • Details Background:
This setting controls the background displayed on the detail pages for items.
    • Dimmed Art: Displays a full screen, dimmed version of the background artwork on detail pages.
    • Artwork Colors (the default): Utilizes colors from the title’s artwork within the background on title detail pages.
    • None: The default background for the application is used for detail pages (dark gradient).

Does Plex work well in NVIDIA Shield Pro?

NVIDIA Shield Pro

  • Dolby Vision profile 7 support
  • Lossless audio support
  • AI Upscaling is pretty sweet but can produce artifacts on some content.
  • Hue Stream app. Allows you to sync Hue lights as if you have a Sync Box but don’t have to spend $250

  • UX is typical Android TV clunkiness/dated.
  • Plex Client is buggy. That’s the biggest reason I’m giving the Apple TV a shot despite it’s short comings compared the Shield. My wife and kids always had to force close the Plex app to get content to play.
  • ExoPlayer shits the bed on ASS subtitles. If you watch a lot of anime, buy an Apple TV or subscribe to Crunchyroll.

Apple TV 4K

  • Ecosystem integration if you have other Apple products. Controlling my TV from my watch is pretty cool.
  • UX and UI is great and fluid.
  • Upscaling is pretty solid. Content looks almost as good as the AI upscaler on the Shield. Granted, I haven’t compared them side by side. 720p content looks pretty good and doesn’t have as much artifacting as the Nvidia AI upscaler.
  • App support is a bit better. Many apps just perform a bit more fluid and less glitches. This probably just has to do with companies devoting more resources to the Apple TV than the Android TV app. I’m not a dev but I feel the state of Android TV and how Google treats it has really hamstrung the Shield. Other than the Shield TV, there really isn’t a good Android TV device and Google kind of treats it like a second rate citizen.

  • No way to sync Hue lights without a Sync Box
  • All audio is transcoded to PCM aside from Atmos.
  • No profile 7 DV support, only profile 5. This means your Dolby Vision rips from Blu-ray are most likely profile 7 and the colors will be all jacked up (pink and green). Most remuxes will have HDR10 fallback so that’s good.

Does Apple TV 4K (2021 Plex) save cost?

Plex just isn’t cutting the cord, but saving you money on apps like Infuse or MrMC for tvOS, The tvOS version of the Plex client also has proper support for ASS subtitles while the Android version does not. Plex has made no visible efforts to add this in over 5 years of people requesting it and the independent effort (which Plex shamelessly takes credit for in their changelogs) to add it to ExoPlayer seems to have fizzled quite a bit of late. So if you have a lot of Anime in your library, that could be a big deciding factor.

Does Apple TV 4K streaming device support Plex?

Plex app is available for Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows devices. Supported streaming devices include Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, and Roku. You can also find Plex for gaming consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One), select smart TVs, a few VR platforms, as well as for Alexa and the Sonos app. I tested Plex on multiple devices, including several Windows 10 machines, a Fire TV Stick, and a Google Pixel 3.

How to setup Plex?

To get started, Plex users set up a server on a device using the Plex Media Server application and add local media libraries to it. Plex is best for people with large repositories of local media files but not necessarily a lot of space on the devices to which they’ll be streaming the content. It’s also for people who oppose popular video and music streaming services. Although we don’t condone the practice, content pirates may be drawn to Plex as well.

Once the media server is configured, Plex users can stream and download that server content on other devices as well as share their libraries with other people via the new cross-platform Plex app.

Supported file format

In terms of audio, Plex supports MP3, M4A, FLAC, and WMA files. For videos, the list includes MP4, MKV, HEVC, AVI, MOV, and DIVX. Plex can also display JPG, PNG, RAW, and TBN image files. Plex includes built-in tools that convert non-natively supported files, such as DTS, to a usable format. You can also stream 4K content. Plex’s playback flexibility is similar to that of VLC Player.

Does Apple TV 4K support Plex podcast?

Plex also includes a Podcasts section. To get started, click the Podcasts menu item on the left-hand menu. In the center console, you can browse through recommended or featured categories of podcasts, such as Popular, News & Politics, or Society & Culture. In addition, you can click the Categories button to see the whole list. Of course, if you already know what podcast you want to listen to, you can just search for it in the top bar or, in the case that it’s not there, add the show directly via its URL.

Plex Live TV

Live TV & DVR functionality is a top Plex Pass feature, enabling you to hook up an antenna, tuner and hard drive at home, then broadcast it remotely to your Plex account. Plex will even offer a comprehensive guide based on your local listings.

It’s amazingly useful — if you like network TV and can’t watch shows as they air, at any rate. A Premium subscription also gets you mobile app access (assuming you haven’t already paid to activate them separately), trailers and extras for movies you own, and lyrics for your song library. It’s also the only way to get parental controls on Plex.

In my opinion, the Premium subscription’s benefits are relatively modest, unless you specifically want live TV recording. But the subscription is also not that expensive.
